SHORT COURSE: INTEGRATED STRATIGRAPHIC APPROACHES

Instructors: Dr. Sander Houben (TNO) and Dr. Renaud Bouroullec (TNO)

Introduction
East Africa provides a frontier for hydrocarbon, mineral resource and geothermal exploration. Successful ventures require detailed and consistent stratigraphic understanding, allowing depositional patterns to be placed in tectonic, paleogeographic and paleoclimatic context. This 1-day short course covers various bio-, chemo-, seismo- and sequence stratigraphic methods. In the second part of this workshop, we will discuss a number of multidisciplinary case-studies. Specific attention will be paid to visualisation techniques and practices.

PROVISIONAL OUTLINE TOPICS

1. The Geological Time Scale: current status
  - Chronostratigraphy and the Geological Time Scale
  - Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP)
  - Radiometric age dating
  - Use of orbital parameters for calibration of geologic time

2. Climate, sea level, and stratigraphy
Multivariate techniques:
  - Principal Component Analysis
  - Correspondence Analysis
  - Transfer Functions
Event stratigraphy:
  - Stable isotope ratios
  - Climate perturbations in the geological record
  - Oceanic Anoxic Events
Sequence stratigraphy based on proxy records:
  - Sequence stratigraphic concepts and nomenclature
  - Backstripping techniques
  - Paleo-ecological ratios
  - Poumot cycles

3. Stratigraphic charts and visualization techniques
  - Wheeler diagrams
  - Time-Thickness maps
  - Paleogeographic maps
  - Illustration of the above by discussing case-studies
