Field Trip 2: 'Foz do Douro' Geological Walk
Thursday 13 September, 09:30 - 14:30 hrs
Field trip leaders: Rui Moura (University of Porto), Helena Maria Mendes da Silva (University of Porto)
Field Trip Description
Along the shoreline of Porto, there are magnificent outcrops of several types of ancient metamorphic rocks (gneiss, metasediments and amphibolites) of Precambrian age (older than 570 million years) cut by much younger hercynian granites (290 million years old).
This field trip will take you on a walk along the Foz do Douro, a two-kilometre thematic path between S Francisco Xavier Fort and Praia dos Ingleses.
There are six stopping points of interest along the way, where you can learn about the rare outcrops and their unique characteristics; a variety of lithologies, geological structures and geomorphological features.
|09:30||Departure from Praça da Liberdade (meeting point)|
|10:00||Arrival to first location for geological walk|
|13:00||End of geological walk|
