Field trip 2: Chalk Reservoir Analogue and Bryozoan Mounds at Stevns Klint

Field trip description

Field trip to the famous Stevns Klint section with Upper Maastrichtian chalk, the K-T boundary profile and the lower Danian bryozoan mounds. The trip will look into aspects of dynamic chalk and bryozoan limestone sedimentation and reservoir properties. The tour includes a 2 km walk along the beach to study the architecture of the bryozoan mounds.






Preliminary programme:

08:00  Departure from Bella Centre, Copenhagen 
09:30 Panoramic view of Stevns Klint and short visit to the Højerup Church where the eastern part collapsed into the sea in 1928 due to marine undercutting

Stop to examine the overall Maastrichtian-Danian succession and the uppermost Maastrichtian chalk with flint and small mounds.

Please note: stairs with 112 steps and 24m elevation difference leads to the beach locality.

11:00   Stop to examine the classic K/T section – the iridium sample locality of Alvarez
Lunch at Rødvig Kro
Guided 2 km walk along gravel beach to inspect the architecture of the bryozoan mounds
Departure from Stevns back to Copenhagen. Afternoon snack included
Arrival at Bella Center, Copenhagen
