Deepwater Project Management 101: Introduction on “Deepwater Challenges, Risks, and how Technology Impacts Economics”

We are delighted to introduce the Educational Session that will be held at the Workshop on Deepwater Exploration in Mexico delivered by Schlumberger and Diamond Offshore dedicated to all of the young professionals that want to learn about Deepwater Project Management.

Time At Mariott Resort Hotel Cancun
14:00 Course Starts
18:00 Course Ends

Objective

The seminar is to familiarize the attendees with the technical challenges in the deepwater environment and how technology is employed to solve problems, mitigate risk, and improve project economics. The course will focus primarily on the Well Construction phase (drilling and formation evaluation) where the deepwater challenges require specialized equipment, minimizing environmental and well construction risk exposure, and always considering the ever present expensive project economics. New rules and regulations post-Macondo GOM USA incident have heightened the industry awareness that engineering and execution of deepwater projects must utilize technologies to minimize uncertainty in well design and demonstrate optimal solutions with maximum performance and lowest risk. The seminar will focus on the deepwater rig requirements and the technologies employed used to drill and evaluate deepwater reservoirs. Several case studies from deepwater GOM USA and other Latin America projects will be used to showcase the technologies and how implementation of project management principles are used for pre-drill planning along with Best practices, Lessons Learned, and employing a multi-disciplinary approach as the best approach to mitigate risk and maximize safety, efficiency, and reliability.

Technical Programme

Part One: Deepwater Drilling Rigs presented by Diamond Offshore

1. Evolution of the deepwater rigs  (Gen 2 to Gen 6)

2. Criteria for selecting a Deepwater rig (Technical and Economic consideration

  • Semi sub versus Drill ship (moored or Dynamic Position)
  • Logistics considerations, how does rig type impact this plan?
  • POB (Personnel on board),
  • Deck and Pit capacities
  • Cost of TOTAL project versus rig selection

3.  Well Control Features including ROV’s

  • How are subsea BOP’s connected?
  • Components of a subsea BOP stack
  • Components of the riser system including ball joint, riser tensioners, sliding joint
  • WHAT is a “watch circle”
  • Emergency disconnect considerations. “WHEN and WHY”

4. Drilling technologies
